SUNY REACH Virtual Learning Session I: Microcredentials
February 17, 2022
Presented by Cynthia Proctor, Director of Communications and Academic Policy Development, SUNY with Lewis J. Kahler, Vice President for Learning and Academic Affairs, Mohawk Valley Community College
Description: SUNY micro-credentials are compact credentials that provide the learner with immediate workforce-ready skills and, wherever possible also put the earner on a pathway to additional credentials (more micro-credentials, a certificate, initial or advanced degree). They are designed to be flexible and can generally be completed in well under a year. In this way, they can be a terrific tool to bring adult learners to campus for the first time or to bring them back to college after an extended period away. Starting with something small, often just three courses gives the learner time to become familiar with your campus, familiar with college-level work, and can be just the confidence boost that they need to move forward. It is this aspect of SUNY’s micro-credential program that we feel aligns particularly well with SUNY REACH. SUNY’s micro-credential program has grown considerably with 31 campuses offering over 400 micro-credentials. In this session, you will learn about SUNY’s micro-credential framework, hear from campuses that have already launched programs, and strategize about how to apply this work to the REACH program.
